GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Softball team split their Atlantic East Conference opener with Immaculata on Saturday afternoon. The Griffins took game one, 7-4, while the Mighty Macs spoiled the sweep, taking the nightcap, 8-2.
Game one
Alexis Gartner picked up the win in the opener throwing a complete game while striking out a pair of batters.
Amanda Clark and
Lauren Waller each picked up a pair of hits and added an RBI. Waller would also score twice while
Tori Sherwood drove in a pair.
Immaculata took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning but the Griffins would respond the home half with a pair of runs. Clark and Sherwood would start the frame with back-to-back doubles to tie the contest and then
Emma Clark would plate Sherwood with an RBI ground-out.
The Mighty Macs tried to answer in the fourth with another pair of runs to retake the lead 3-2. Gwynedd rallied again this time with Waller setting the table on a lead-off double. Clark moved her to third and Sherwood knocked her in to be all square after four full innings.
The Griffins would find themselves again down in the sixth inning but erupted for four runs to take a 7-4 lead.
Rebecca Christoffers tripled to start the rally followed by
Alyssa Cowan's RBI double to score Christoffers. Waller then singled to left for run to plate Cowan. After an Immaculata pitching change, Clark singled to score Waller.
Emily Shaheen plated the last run of the inning capitalizing on a Mighty Mac error.
IU would put a pair of runners on in their last at bats but Gartner would close the door to earn her second win of the year.
Game two
In the nightcap, Immaculata would plate seven runs in the second inning to help split the twinbill in an 8-2 final.
Cowan would score on an errant throw in the third and a Christoffers double that plated
Alex Kinal in the fourth accounted for the Griffin runs.
Emma Clark suffered the loss in the circle.
GMercyU will return back to Atlantic East Conference action next Saturday when they host Neumann University at 1 p.m.
