Griffins Fall To Kean In Home Opener

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy gave ninth-ranked Kean all it could handle but the Cougars were able to win both games of a non-conference doubleheader in the Griffins' home opener on Thursday. Kean took game one, 8-3, and the nightcap, 5-1.

Game one
The Griffins fell behind 3-0 but Lauren Waller helped tie things up in the third as she cranked a three-run homer. The longball was her second this season and seventh career dinger.

Kean's Tayrn DiGiacomo limited GMercyU to three hits after the third. The Cougars added RBI singles in the fourth and the sixth before a three-run seventh cemented the final score.

Waller finished 1-for-4 while Tori Sherwood added two hits and Rebecca Christoffers walked twice. Alexis Gartner took the loss in the circle.

Olivia Zengel was 3-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a walk.

Game two
Scoreless through three innings, Gwynedd scored a run in the fourth when Waller scored from second on an error at short for a 1-0 lead. However, the Cougars used a big inning tin the fifth to jump ahead.

In the fifth, Kean had four hits and used a Griffin error to score four times. Zengel added an RBI single in the sixth to put the deficit at four. She finished 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Waller, Amanda Clark, and Chelsea Briggs all had two hits apiece. Pitcher Emma Clark was tagged with the loss, striking out three with two walks.

Gwynedd Mercy kicks off Atlantic East play this Saturday when they welcome Immaculata for two with the first game starting at noon.
