Griffins Grounded At Goucher

TOWSON, MD. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Lacrosse team fell on the road Saturday afternoon, 26-14, at Goucher College.

Victoria Braeunle led GMercyU with six points on five goals and an assist, and eight draw controls. Samantha Brown added a trio of goals and a helper while Victoria Mollitor scored a pair of goals.

Goalie Julia Smith recorded 10 saves on the afternoon. Jill Kane was tops in groundballs, picking up a career-high six.

Mollitor scored the Griffins goal assisted by Braeunle to tie the contest early. Braeunle would tie the game again assisted by Laura Pelczar. Brown would then give Gwynedd their first lead of the game 3-2 at the 22:45 mark when she scored on a free position shot.

Goucher would answer with three goals, however Meleah Hoats responded with an unassisted tally to cut the lead to 5-4.

The Gophers stretched the margin to 10-4 with just over five minutes remaining in the first half. Gwynedd didn't go quietly with goals from Braeunle and Pelczar but trailed 11-6 at the break.

Braeunle would start the second half scoring with an unassisted goal to trail 11-7.  Goucher would respond again with a trio of goals but Jill Kane would score her first goal of the game on a free position shot with 22:32 remaining.

Both teams would trade goals over the next seven minutes. Braeunle would add two more on free position shots while Brown would score again unassisted.

With 15:24 remaining Mollitor would add her second of the game to cut the Gopher lead to five (17-12). Goucher would add another pair but the Griffins would respond with a Brown free position goal. Anna Grace Bernicker would add her first goal of the game with 7:19 to cut the lead to 20-14.

The Gophers would close out the game scoring the last six goals for the 26-14 victory.

Julia Gazzola led Goucher with eight points on six goals and two assists. Shannon Stull also netted six.

The Griffins return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Rutgers-Camden at 4 p.m.
