Softball Suffers Setbacks In DH Defeat At Widener

CHESTER, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy was on the wrong end of two defeats at Widener on Saturday, falling in game one, 7-6, in a walkoff single, and later a 7-1 decision in the second.

Game one
Gwynedd saw a big seventh-inning rally evaporate as the Pride used an RBI single to win it. The Griffins trailed 6-4 heading into their final at bat but put together some key hits to score three times, with the last two runs coming with two outs.

Kaylee Craig and Chelsea Briggs were each 2-for-3 with two runs and a two-run home run. Lauren Waller and Tori Sherwood added a pair of hits. Waller is fresh off her 100th career hit in Thursday's DH at Moravian, added her 101st and 102nd in game one.

Scoreless into the second, Briggs reached on a single before Craig sent out a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall for her first career home run and gave GMercyU a 2-0 lead. The Pride countered in the bottom half, taking use of two Griffin errors and five hits to score four runs.

In the fourth, Briggs stepped to the plate with a runner on and she cranked her first homer of the season to tie things up at 4-4. A two-run, two-out single in the bottom of the inning, once again restored a two-run cushion for the home team.

Craig reached on a single with one out in the seventh and would come around to score on a Rebecca Christoffers RBI single. Now with runners on second and third, Waller grounded out to short, but not before Alex Kinal raced home to knot it up. Amanda Clark then plated Christoffers with a single to center for a 7-6 lead.

Widener had a lead-off double in the seventh, which was sacrificed to third. Ariel Silva then doubled home a run to tie the game once again. Silva was lifted for a pinch runner where a bloop single to center was enough to score the winning run.

Game two
The Griffins were limited to three hits through the first six innings as the Pride built a 7-0 lead heading into the last frame.

Like game one, Gwynedd tried to use a late-inning rally, but came up short. An RBI groundout from Craig was the only run in the frame, and later in the inning, the team loaded the bases with two outs.

Waller collected two of the five hits with Briggs doubling and scoring in that seventh inning.

Up next for the team is a twinbill at Centenary on Monday starting at 3 p.m.
