GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy held Wilkes to just two second-half goals en route to their first win of the season as the Griffins posted an 18-8 victory over the Colonels in the home opener on Saturday.
Samantha Brown, who scored four goals, hit a personal milestone, as the junior recorded her 100th career point on her last tally of the day, a free position shot with 4:05 in the game.
Victoria Mollitor totaled six goals, a career high, while
Laura Pelczar added three and
Meleah Hoats with two.
Jill Kane,
Victoria Braeunle, and
Anna Bernicker also scored for Gwynedd (1-1).
Both teams traded goals in the first half, but it was Wilkes putting three scores in a row to take a 6-3 lead midway through the stanza. From there, the Griffins outscored the Colonels, 4-0, over a 10 minute span to reclaim the lead and later take a 7-6 edge into the half.
Wilkes scored 4:35 into the half to tie things up, but soon after, Bernicker scored the first of 11-straight goals to open up a sizable advantage.
Kyria Boccio led Wilkes (0-1) with four goals, three draws and a pair of caused turnovers.
For Gwynedd, Brown and Braeunle each had seven draws. Brown tied a personal best with three caused turnovers while Braeunle ended the day with a career high five assists.
Goalie
Julia Smith made four saves in each half to pick up the win. Sarah Carlini had nine stops for Wilkes.
The team is off until Wednesday when they welcome Delaware Valley in a 4 p.m. start.
