Pacers Spoil Griffin Senior Day

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy closed out the regular season with a 66-62 loss to Marywood University on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.

The Griffins and Pacers will meet again on Monday in the first round of the Atlantic East Conference Tournament in Scranton at 7 p.m.

Prior to the game, the team celebrated Senior Day and honored their five student-athletes, Susan Bossler, Monet McGorda, Lyndsay Micucci, Olivia Roseman and Marisa Sullivan, along with their parents.

Roseman would lead GMercyU with a team high 17 points. Shannon Carroll (12) and Chyanne Fine (10) rounded out the double-figure scoring.

A Denise Sacco three pointer would give the Griffins their largest lead of the game at 19-14 in the closing moments of the first quarter. Marywood retook the lead in the second, going ahead by four points. Carroll would respond for Gwynedd with a pair of baskets to tie the game at 30-30 at the halfway mark.

The Pacers outscored the Griffins by seven in the third quarter to lead (47-40) heading into the final frame. They would then stretch the lead to as much as 14 with just over five minutes remaining.

Gwynedd did not go away quietly, as they cut the lead down to nine (60-51) thanks to a Roseman three pointer.  Still trailing by nine in the closing minute, a McGorda leaner in the paint would cut the lead to seven. Tolu Omole would then force a turnover and get a bucket of her own to cut the lead to five. Carroll would grab an offensive rebound and score to cut the lead to three.

Marywood would score but Bossler would answer to cut the lead to (65-62) with just twenty five seconds remaining. However Marywood would hold on connecting on a free throw to help ice the 66-62 victory.

Natasha Hessling led the Pacers with a game-high 22 points.

The two teams will meet again Monday night at 7 p.m. in Scranton.  The Griffins bested Marywood 85-81 in their previous match-up as both teams split the season series.
