Women's Basketball Bows Out Of Playoffs

SCRANTON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy had its season come to an end as the sixth-seeded Griffins fell at the third-seeded Pacers of Marywood, 70-53, in a first-round game of the Atlantic East Tournament Monday night.

Susan Bossler netted 13 points and Sydney Thompson added 10 off the bench to lead GMercyU, but the Pacers made things difficult, keeping a lead they did not relinquish.

The two teams met just two days ago in the regular season finale at The Griffin Complex, but it was Marywood coming away with the win.

Natasha Hessling led all scorers with 23 points and pulled down a game-high 22 rebounds.

Gwynedd trailed 36-19 at the half but slowly grinded the deficit down in the third, using an 18-6 run. Bossler hit a three and later two free throws to get the score to five (42-37) with 3:57 left in the stanza. However, Marywood went on a run of their own, scoring the next seven points to reclaim a double digit lead. A triple from Thompson at the end of the third made it a 54-45 score heading into the final frame.

In the fourth, the Pacers went up 62-49 off a three-pointer from Aryah Aungst with just over six minutes remaining to turn the tables for good.

The loss ends the paths of the team's five seniors: Bossler, Monet McGorda, Lyndsay Miccuci, Olivia Roseman, and Marisa Sullivan. They have amassed a 65-44 overall record as well as a Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship in 2017.
