Women's Hoops Rallies Past Golden Wolves

READING, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy overcame a slow first quarter and battled back from a double-digit deficit in the second to go on and post a 93-86 victory at Alvernia on Wednesday night.

10 different Griffins made a three-pointer, 15 in total, as the team used a big third-quarter to take the lead for good to help notch their third win on the season. Denise Sacco led Gwynedd with 12 points while the foursome of Tamia Wessels, Elise Sylvester, Jill Kane and the returning Sydney Thompson, who saw her first action of the season, all added 10 points apiece.

The team also had a season-low eight turnovers while the Golden Wolves made 30, leading to 37 Griffin points.

Making only three field goals in the first quarter, GMercyU saw Alvernia hold a 22-11 lead after 10 minutes of action. Gwynedd made their move in the second, getting back-to-back-to-back three pointers as part of a 12-0 run to tie it up at 32-32 with four minutes in the period. Later in the frame Marissa Sandone hit from deep to give the team its first lead (37-36), but Alvernia used a scoring spurt of their own to hold a 48-45 advantage at halftime.

Gwynedd took the lead for good with just under four minutes to go in the third after back-to-back triples from Thompson and Sandone.

The Golden Wolves got to one point early in the fourth, but the Griffins limited Alvernia to five field goals in the final frame including an 0-for-9 showing from downtown.

Haley Crossley and Cayla Sharkey had high rebound honors with six each respectively. Tolu Omole tied a career best with six assists. Sylvester added five steals while Sharkey blocked three shots.

Gabrielle De Vito netted 16 for Alvernia while teammate Julia Ewen kicked in 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Griffins play their final game of the calendar year on Thursday with a trip to Keystone to face off with the Giants in a 5 p.m. start.
