GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy fought off Immaculata, 2-1, to pick up their first Atlantic East Conference win on the year on Saturday as the team celebrated Senior Day.
Prior to the game, the team along with the coaching staff took time to honor and recognize their three seniors and their families:
Tori Sherwood,
Erika Cimino, and
Carlisle Dixon.
Alyssa Tomsic scored the first of her two goals on the day just 2:32 into the game. On a ball sent into the arc, she was able to get just enough on a shot to trickle past IU goalie Randie Kuhar for an early 1-0 lead.
The shot (12-9) and penalty corner (10-8) totals were nearly identical but were in favor of Gwynedd.
Still up by one entering the third quarter, both teams had three corners in the frame but were unsuccessful.
Now in the fourth, Tomsic put in her fifth goal on the year as she intercepted a clearing pass in the Immaculata end where she found herself one-on-one with Kuhar. Later in the quarter, goalie
Abi Kennedy turned away the Mighty Macs' best chances on the day, making two point-blank stops on a corner. IU would break through to make 2-1 with a late score with 2:01 to play. Gwynedd was able lock things down to snap their six-game winless streak.
Kennedy ended the day with five saves as did Kuhar.
The team returns to action on Tuesday as they host Widener in a non-conference matchup at 6 p.m.
