CENTER VALLEY, PA. -- DeSales held off Gwynedd Mercy's fourth-quarter pressure as the Griffins fell 3-2 to the Bulldogs in non-conference action Tuesday night.
After each team scored in the early stages of the first quarter, it would remain tied at 1-1 before DeSales netted two goals of their own in the fourth. GMercyU pulled within one with five minutes left to play, but were unable to get the tying tally.
Caitlyn Thornon opened the scoring 6:26 into the first as she netted her third on the season with an assist from
Lauren Jani. The Bulldogs answered with a score just under two minutes later from Tyra Wringle. DeSales fired off seven shots and had nine penalty corners in the second, but Gwynedd held fast to keep the game knotted at 1-1 at the half.
With each team registering one shot each in the third, the fourth quarter featured eight shots total. The Bulldogs struck 54 seconds into the final frame and later made it 3-1 with a goal with 6:19 remaining.
Allison Campbell cut the lead to one with her team-leading seventh tally on the year to make things interesting as the clock showed five minutes to go.
Griffin goalie
Abi Kennedy made four stops in the contest. The Bulldogs' Katarina Polyviou recorded four.
Gwynedd Mercy will turn their attention to conference play when they open Atlantic East action next Wednesday at Wesley in a rematch of last season's title game.
