RADNOR, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy suffered a 91-74 Atlantic East Conference defeat at Cabrini Sunday afternoon.
The Griffins rallied in the final quarter, turning an 81-59 Cavalier score to an eight-point contest with just 3:02 left, thanks to a big 14-0 run to get the team within striking distance. However, Cabrini held GMercyU without a field goal the rest of the way.
Susan Bossler led Gwynedd with 20 points, going 7-for-12 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from downtown.
Denise Sacco knocked down three triples in finishing with 13 points.
Marissa Sandone hit twice from deep as the junior totaled a career-best 10 points. The team hit for exactly 12 three's in the game for the third contest in a row.
Cabrini's Nomi Washington led all scorers with a game-high 31 points, scoring 22 of them in the second half.
The first half saw GMercyU hit for nine three-pointers, four of which came in the first quarter to help the team turn a 9-3 deficit to a 14-9 lead. Leading by three late, Washington struck from downtown to knot the teams at 18-18 after one quarter.
After two free throws from Megan Matthews to give the Cavaliers a 36-29 edge with 2:19 before the half, Sacco drained back-to-back threes to get it to a one-point game at the break.
Cabrini closed out the third quarter on a 19-4 run and outscore Gwynedd, 36-17, in the frame to take a 72-52 advantage heading into the final frame.
In the fourth, Gwynedd looked to rally as a three from Sandone with 6:37 to play helped kickstart that 14-0 run over the next three minutes. Her baseline jumper pulled the Griffins to 81-73 at the 3:02 mark but the team could not find a way to get any closer down the stretch.
The team will host Marymount here at The Griffin Complex this Wednesday in a conference matchup starting at 6 p.m.
