SCRANTON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy scored 30 points in the fourth quarter to rally past Marywood, 85-81, Wednesday evening in an Atlantic East Conference contest.
The Griffins trailed 61-55 heading into the final 10 minutes but the squad put together a 17-2 run to open the stanza and was able to fight off the Pacers to win their third game in a row.
A pair of Griffins had career nights, as
Olivia Roseman and
Sydney Thompson each netted personal highs in scoring. Roseman led all scorers with 24 points with Thompson adding 21. The duo combined to hit 11 of the team's 12 three-pointers.
Chyanne Fine added 14 points and 10 boards for her second double-double on the season.
Kilie Wyers was one of five Pacers in double figures, totaling 16 points. Natasha Hessling contributed a double-double (14 points/10 rebounds).
Gwynedd led by as much as 10 on two occasions in the first quarter; however Marywood cut the lead to 26-21. In the second, both teams cooled off, but GMercyU still held a 39-35 edge at halftime.
The third quarter saw the Pacers shoot over 84% and use 13-1 spurt to take their first lead since early in the first. A late three put Marywood up by six as the teams entered the fourth.
In that game-changing scoring run to open the fourth, Roseman, Thompson, and
Jill Kane all hit from behind the arc to spark the Griffins. Marywood tried to put together one last push as a three from Wyers made it a one-point game (82-81) with 20 seconds left. Kane upped the lead with two free throws before Thompson forced a turnover on the ensuing Pacer possession. She would go to the line and hit one of two with 11 ticks remaining for a four-point advantage.
Kane finished with nine points and a career-high four assists while Roseman kicked in eight boards and three steals.
Gwynedd Mercy resumes action on Sunday when they play at Cabrini in a conference clash starting a 1 p.m.
