Shooting Surge Ignites Griffins Past Wesley

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy used a big fourth quarter to go on and defeat Wesley, 79-57, for their first Atlantic East Conference win on the season.

The Griffins connected on a season-high 12 three-pointers, which helped erase a seven-point deficit after the first frame and widen the lead later in the contest.

Susan Bossler led all scorers with 22 points as the senior tied a career-best with six triples. Denise Sacco chipped in 18 points as she drained three treys on the evening. Shannon Carroll led the team in rebounds with nine while Olivia Roseman's 10 assists were one shy of tying a personal best.

Shelby Johnson contributed 17 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs, for the Wolverines. Monshea Newsome-Murray contributed 13 points, six steals, five boards, and four assists.

After trading baskets in the early get-go, Wesley broke open an 8-8 score, netting the next nine points A steal and bucket by the Wolverines at the end of the quarter, who shot 66% in the stanza, brought the score to 20-13.

Gwynedd opened the second with a run of their own, going on a 12-1 spurt capped by a three from Thompson to take a 25-23 lead midway through the period. GMercyU held a 34-29 edge at halftime.

Two minutes into the second half, Wesley hit a layup to get within three, but Sacco quickly hit a three and then stole the ball where she was fouled and sank two free throws followed by bucket in the paint from Chyanne Fine to give the Griffins their first double-digit lead (42-32). Wesley climbed to within three as the teams headed to the fourth.

Gwynedd came out hot in the final frame, with a three from Bossler and a steal that converted to two free throws from Roseman. The team shot 64% (11-of-17) over the final 10 minutes, using a huge 16-0 run over a four-minute span to help put the game out of reach.

Thompson totaled 12 points, while Carroll kicked in 11 and Roseman with seven.

The Griffins will be back in action a week from today as they head to Marywood for a 6 p.m. start.
