GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- An early goal stood as the game's only score to help Centenary escape with a 1-0 decision over Gwynedd Mercy Saturday afternoon.

The Cyclone's Jared Miele scored 1:08 into the contest as his short cross along the endline ricocheted off two defenders and past Griffin keeper Kace Peters.

GMercyU shook off the bad luck as the defense withstood any further offense from Centenary, despite being outshot 14-1 in the first half.
Peters exited the game later in the first due to injury, opening the chance for freshman keeper Joe Duffy who made six saves in relief to keep the Griffins within striking distance.

In the second, half, Gwynedd had two good looks to try and get the equalizer. In the 50th minute, Tim Redick found a deflected ball off a bad clear at the top of the box, but his shot was stopped by Centenary's Devon Warne. Abdul Bangura tried an impressive bicycle kick off a cross in the 82nd minute that just sailed over the crossbar. The Griffins set up for a corner kick with just under two minutes in regulation, but could not get a shot off.

Gwynedd Mercy opens Atlantic East play on Wednesday when they head to Scranton to face off with Marywood.
