TCNJ Slips Past Field Hockey

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy took on nationally-ranked College of New Jersey Tuesday evening, but it was the Lions escaping with a close 2-1 decision.

The Griffins battled through the first half, but TCNJ broke through to get a 1-0 lead when Iris Schuck was able to knock in a loose ball with 17:30 left in the stanza.
In the second half, Gwynedd was able to get their first penalty corner of the contest and they would cash in to tie things up. Kaitlyn Lutz stuffed home her first goal of the season off an insert pass from Kathryn Lehman in the 55th minute.

The Lions however, countered just over two minutes later as they converted on a penalty corner goal from Kayla Peterson.

GMercyU (4-2) pushed for the equalizer late in the contest and were awarded a penalty corner as time expired, but their pass attempt went out of bounds.

The Griffins were joined by their honorary captains on behalf of Athletes Helping Athletes, a non-profit organization that helps to raise funds and awareness for special needs programs in the Delaware Valley. Cierra Fudala, Erin Campbell, Jake Klouser, Ryan Farrell took part in the pregame coin flip and starting lineups for a unique experience. Gwynedd goalie Abi Kennedy recorded five saves. The Lions (4-1) outshot Gwynedd, 10-2, and held a 10-2 advantage in corners.

On Saturday, Gwynedd Mercy will welcome another nationally-ranked team from the New Jersey Conference as Montclair State visits for a 4 p.m. start.
