CHESTER, PA. -- A walk-off home run highlighted a Gwynedd Mercy sweep over Widener on Thursday afternoon.
Amanda Clark's two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh helped the Griffins to a 7-6 win in game one. Jess Behr hit her second two-run shot of the day to go on for a 4-2 victory in game two.
Game one
Behr's two-run blast in the third put the Griffins on top, 2-1, but the Pride crossed an unearned run in the fifth to tie things back up.
In the sixth, back-to-back walks to Behr and Clark to lead off the frame, led to an RBI from
Lauren Waller.
Tori Sherwood then stepped to the plate in the next at-bat to double home Clark and Waller for a 5-2 lead.
Widener would score four runs in the top of the seventh thanks to four hits and two Griffin errors.
With two outs in the bottom half, Behr worked a full-count walk before Clark sent the first pitch she saw to center for her second homer of the season and more importantly the walk-off win.
Behr scored three times and stole a base as she was officially 1-for-2. Amanda Hess was credited with the win in relief, striking out five in four-plus for starter
Emma Clark.
Game two
Hess scattered seven hits and allowed just one earned run for the sweep. Behr hit her 18th career home run in the Griffins' first at-bat. In the second, the team had the bases loaded and one out. After a forceout at home,
Alex Kinal also worked a full count walk to drive in a run for a 3-0 edge.
The Pride got on the board in the third scoring on a passed ball, but
Emily Shaheen returned the favor, scoring on an error with two outs in the bottom half to keep it a three-run game. With runners on second and third, Widener was able to score on a groundout in the sixth to get within 4-2.
Clark slammed the door on the sweep, getting a 1-2-3 seventh to close it out.
Behr added a pair of hits while Kinal walked twice.
Gwynedd Mercy (10-3) will host Marywood on Saturday in CSAC action, weather pending. First pitch is now at 2 p.m.
