Softball Edges Immaculata In CSAC DH Sweep

Late-inning theatrics from Behr and Clark; Christoffers reaches milestone in game 2

IMMACULATA, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy put together a pair of nailbiters with a side of late-inning heroics to go on and take two at Immaculata on Friday for a CSAC DH sweep. Amanda Clark's solo home run in the seventh inning was the difference in 1-0 victory in game one. Game two provided the same drama if not more when Jess Behr hit a three-run homer with two outs in the seventh to erase a two-run deficit in a 7-6 win.

Melissa Hess picked up a pair of wins on the day. In game one, she struck out six, yielding seven hits and two walks in a complete game shutout. She came on in relief in game two, fanning four with no walks, allowing three unearned runs on five hits in four-plus innings to get the victory.

Game one
A pitcher's duel between Hess and Immaculata's Emma Bischoff was center stage, as the two combined for 14 K's in the game and nine hits. Bischoff held the Griffin bats to just two hits, but none bigger than Clark, who cranked a lead-off homer in the seventh to break a scoreless tie.

Hess got out of two jams, each with two runners on in the third and fifth innings, as her defense ended each inning with groundouts to squash any threats.

In the seventh, a lead-off single would put the tying run on base. After a strikeout for one out, Behr was able to get a forceout at second, firing a ball in from right field to get runner at second. Another unassisted forceout at second was the third out to lock up the win.

Game two
The Griffins found a way to rally after four errors led to four unearned Immaculata runs, including two in the bottom of the sixth that gave IU a 6-4 lead. In that seventh, with runners at second and third with two down, Behr delivered an opposite field dinger to left that gave Gwynedd its first lead of the contest.

The Mighty Macs led 2-0 into the third before GMercyU got on the board. Becki Christoffer's sac fly drove home Brianna Polly, who earlier put herself in scoring position with a triple, to make it 2-1.

Tori Sherwood doubled home Lauren Waller in the fourth made it 3-2.

In the fifth, Christoffers hit a personal milestone, recording her 100th career hit, a double to left. She would later score on an RBI base hit from Alyssa Morales. Christoffers becomes the tenth player in program history to accomplish the feat.

IU plated an unearned run in the bottom half on an error at short with a runner at second to reclaim a 4-3 edge.

Clark smacked her second leadoff homer of the day, this time in the sixth, to once again deadlock the two teams.

After IU plated two runs in the sixth for a two-run lead, it set the stage for Behr in the seventh.

For the game, Waller was 3-for-4. Clark, Morales, and Sherwood all added two hits apiece.

The Griffins (20-4, 11-1 CSAC) welcome Centenary tomorrow on Senior Day. First pitch for the CSAC twinbill is at 1 p.m.
