Softball Stumbles At Kean

UNION, N.J. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Softball team returned back to action on Wednesday traveling to nationally ranked Kean University for a pair of games but it was the Cougars taking both, topping the Griffins in the opener, 3-1, and the nightcap, 9-2.

Alyssa Morales, Amanda Clark, Erin Hallahan and Tori Sherwood all recorded a pair of hits on the afternoon for the Griffins.

Game 1
Trailing 2-0 heading into the fourth the Griffins got on the board when Lauren Waller reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. She moved to third on drop in the outfield and later score on a groundout from Kelsey Czibik to cut the lead to 2-1. Kean would respond in the home half on a run off a wild pitch to retake a two run lead (3-1).

GMercyU would have their opportunities with five hits but left seven runners on base. In the circle Melissa Hess struck-out four while working into the fifth inning. Emma Clark would make her first appearance of the season in relief and worked out of a jam inducing a pair of ground-outs.

Game 2
The Griffins recorded seven hits and scored a pair of runs in the nightcap. Becki Christoffers plated Hallahan and Sherwood in the fifth with her RBI single to spark the GMercyU offense. Kean though scored nine runs on 18 hits for the 9-2 victory.

The Cougars plated two in the first and three in the second for a 5-0 edge. With two outs in that fifth, Christoffers singled to left for two runs. Once again, Kean countered in the bottom half, scoring three runs on three hits and an error.

Gwynedd Mercy (7-3) had their game on Thursday at Clarks Summit already called off due to impeding inclement weather. The Griffins will look to get back at it on Friday when they host Cedar Crest in a CSAC DH starting at noon.
