Griffins Can't Overcome Late Push From DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy saw DeSales net five-straight goals to turn a one-score game into a lead the Griffins could not overcome as the Bulldogs posted a 23-13 score Wednesday afternoon.

GMercyU, who was behind as much as six goals in the first half, battled to get it to a 10-7 score at the half and later get within 12-11 with 23:27 remaining in the contest. From there, DeSales would score five goals over a five-minute span, and eventually 11 of the next 13 scores to pull away.

For the Griffins, rookie Alyssa Tomsic scored six times. Victoria Braeunle added two scores and an assist. Samantha Brown totaled three points on a goal and two helpers. Lauren Mitros, Carrie Kilgore, Camryn Sheahan, and Jill Kane also netted scores for Gwynedd (1-5).

Ellis McCall scored four of her six goals in the second half for the Bulldogs (1-4). Teammate Julia Astram chipped in four goals and two helpers.

DeSales used an early 7-1 run to change a 2-2 score into a six-goal edge, with 13 minutes before the break. Gwynedd netted four of the final five goals of the half to get within three at the break.

Down 12-9 in the beginning stages of the second, back-to-back scores from Tomsic, coming just over a minute apart, got the Griffins within one. Astram and McCall combined to score the next three of the five scores to reclaim a sizable lead. Braeunle 's tally at the 13:07 mark was the final score until Tomsic netted her sixth of the day, but not until 5:49 remained on the clock.

Goalie Nicole Wood registered 14 saves on the day. Rachel Sheubrooks made 17 stops.

Braeunle led the Griffins with six groundballs and three caused turnovers. Mitros collected 14 draw controls, one shy of her career high.

Gwynedd Mercy will look to bounce back on Saturday when they welcome Notre Dame of Maryland to open Colonial States Athletic Conference play. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
