Women's Lacrosse Edged Out By Rutgers-Camden

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- A second-half push came up just short as Gwynedd Mercy fell in a close 16-15 decision to visiting Rutgers-Camden Saturday afternoon.

Down 9-5 at the half, the Griffins clawed their way back in it, tying the score three times in the final 17:50 of the second stanza. A late score from Alyssa Tomsic would pull GMercyU within one with under a minute to play, however Rutgers-Camden was able to win the ensuing draw and were able to run out the clock in the contest.

Tomsic, along with Victoria Braeunle paced the Griffin offense on the day. Tomsic totaled six points on four goals and two assists while Braeunle netted six goals and added an assist. Jill Kane added a pair while Lauren Mitros, Carrie Kilgore, and Tara Pellegrino also tallied goals. Mitros tied a career high with three assists.

Jessica Mayer led all scorers with seven goals. Teammate Nicole Martin added six as the Scarlet Raptors built a 4-0 lead in the game's first 10 minutes. Mitros got the Griffins (1-4) on the board with her ninth on the season at the 15:47 mark. Later, down 8-2, Gwynedd scored three of the next four goals to pull within four at halftime.

After Rutgers-Camden opened the second with a goal, the Griffins found their scoring touch, putting in five of their own over a seven-minute span. Tomsic tied things at 10-10 with her score with 17:50 to play.

Later tied at 11-11, back-to-back goals from Mayer gave R-C (1-0) a two-goal edge. Braeunle scored on a free position shot and Kilgore potted her tenth on the season to make it tied (13-13) for the last time in the game. After Mayer added her seventh goal of the day with 1:19 left, Gwynedd won the draw and set up a score from Tomsic for a one-goal game with 37 ticks left.

Mitros was the team leader in draws, while Braeunle totaled three groundballs. Kilgore tied a career high with three caused turnovers.

Goalie Nicole Wood made 10 saves as she saw a total of 33 shots. Her counterpart, Brittany Watson made 12 stops, eight coming in the second half for Rutgers-Camden.
