STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Gwynedd Mercy defeated Bates, 91-83, in the consolation game of the 2018 Tournament of Heroes Tournament hosted by the College of Staten Island Saturday afternoon.
Courtney Cubbage led all scorers with a game-high 23 points.
Rich Dunham added 21 points along with six assists and six steals, both team highs.
Clayton Wolfe pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to go along with 15 points and three steals on the day.
Gwynedd shot over 50% from the floor in both halves and outrebounded Bates, 35-29, which helped them overcome 16 three-pointers from the Bobcats
Their eight-point lead at halftime swelled to as much as 15 early in the second and shrunk to as low as 60-58 with just under 11 minutes in the game. GMercyU put together a 13-2 run over a five-minute span to re-open their double-digit lead.
Tom Coyne led Bates with 19 points. He and teammate Kody Greenhalgh each hit five three-pointers in the contest.
The Griffins resume Atlantic East Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Marymount.
