Women's Basketball Squeezed By Scranton

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy played in their final game of the semester Tuesday night, but fell to the University of Scranton, 66-45, at The Griffin Complex.

Shannon Carroll led GMercyU in scoring for the second game in a row with 13 points on 6-of-11 shooting.  Chyanne Fine kicked 10 points. Both Carroll and Fine each pulled down five rebounds apiece. The Griffins were held to a season-low two three-pointers, both of which came in the fourth quarter.

Makenzie Mason paced the sixth-ranked (D3Hoops.com) Lady Royals with 24 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. Teammate Emily Sheehan added 16, hitting three of the team's six triples.

Points were at a premium in the first quarter. After over a minute of play, the University of Scranton put the first points on the board on a layup from Mason.  A basket from Tolu Omule pulled the Griffins within 10-6 with 2:33 in the frame. With thirty seconds to go in the first quarter, Fine hit two free throws to close the gap to two points then followed with a jumper at the buzzer that bounced all around the rim and in to tie it up at 10-10.

Scranton had the first four points of the second quarter until Carroll got a bucket on a jumper from the elbow.  The team exchanged baskets keeping Scranton's lead at two. The Lady Royals opened up their advantage by hitting back-to-back three pointers as part of a 10-2 run to close the half, and lead 30-18.

Carroll's twisting layup whittled the deficit down to single digits (38-29) with 3:50 remaining in the third stanza.  The Royals turned up the heat, beginning a 12-4 spurt to open up a 50-33 score after three quarters of play.

The Griffins will be back in action after the holidays as they head down to Marymount University on January 5th in an Atlantic East Conference matchup in a 1 p.m. start.
