Field Hockey Upended In Championship Game

2018 Atlantic East Conference Championship

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy fell in the inaugural Atlantic East Conference Championship in a tough 2-1 decision to Wesley on Saturday.

Midway through the second half, the Wolverines were able to score twice and the Griffins just missed on a penalty stroke late in regulation to cap a wild stanza.

The defense kept Wesley without a shot in the first half while GMercyU put together five seven shots and five penalty corners including a shot off the post, but both teams were scoreless after the first 35 minutes of play. The Griffins got on the board first when Kaitlyn Lutz scored in the 42nd minute off a penalty corner. Alyssa Tomsic assisted on the senior's fourth goal of the year for the 1-0 lead.

Wesley's Jessica Behornar made 1-1 with 16:21 left as she scored the first of her two goals. Her goal less than eight minutes later gave the Wolverines the lead.

With just over eight minutes to play Gwynedd pressed on, recording two penalty corners and getting a penalty stroke opportunity. Lutz's attempt was deflected by goalie Sidney Knott up off the crossbar and out of the net. The team pushed ahead, getting three more corner attempts, the final with no time left on the clock, but were unable to get a shot off.

Behornar was named the Championship Game MVP for her two-goal performance.

Knott made seven saves in goal for Wesley. Netminder Sarah Crane faced two shots as she fell to 8-2 on the season.

The Griffins (13-6) will await selections to the NCAA Division III Tournament and ECAC Tournament on Monday.
