LANCASTER, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy had their 2018 season come to an end with a 2-0 decision at Franklin & Marshall in an NCAA Tournament First-Round Game Wednesday evening.
The Griffins were appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in program history. This season, they earned a bid to the postseason as an at-large.
The first half was a scoreless chess match, but each team had prime opportunities to get the first goal. Just 10:23 into the contest and after a foul in the circle, the Griffins were whistled for a penalty stroke.
Kaitlyn Lutz's attempt was saved by F&M goalie Ilianna Santangelo.
GMercyU goalie
Sarah Crane made a big stop of her own late in the stanza as she got a piece of a wide-open shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner.
The Diplomats, out of the Centennial Conference, were able to get one by Crane with 18:47 left on a goal from Erin Coverdale. Coverdale added the assist on the second F&M goal just over eight minutes later to put Gwynedd on the ropes.
Crane finished the night with a season-high 10 saves. Santangelo recorded three stops for the Diplomats, who move on to face Rochester this weekend.
This was the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
The loss marks the end of the road for the team's four seniors: Crane, Lutz,
Maggie Walsh and
Shannon Carroll. The foursome have combined for a 59-23 overall record, two NCAA Tournament Appearances, two Colonial States Athletic Conference Titles, and four-straight conference championship game appearances.
