DALLAS, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Basketball team opened up the Sisters of Mercy Tournament on Saturday with an 87-76 victory over Mt. Aloysius College hosted by Misericordia University.
Four Griffins reached career highs with
Chyanne Fine leading all scorers with a game-high 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting and a 9-of-12 effort at the free-throw line.
Susan Bossler tied a career best with six three pointers for 18 points and
Shannon Carroll was 7-of-9 from the field while adding a pair of free throws for a new career mark with 16.
Marissa Sandone rounded out the GMercyU scoring with a personal-best nine.Â
Fine and Bossler each pulled down a team high seven rebounds as the team scored 24 points off of 22 Mountie turnovers.
Trailing 21-20 after the first quarter, the Griffins defense clamped down in the second holding Mt. Aloysius to just four field goals while outscoring the Mounties 19-11 in the quarter to take a 39-32 leading heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Griffins surged for 32 points in the third frame. Fine led GMercyU with a quick seven points in the stanza highlighted by a three-point play. The Griffins took a commanding (57-40) lead with two free throws from
Carley Huggard with just under five minutes remaining in the quarter. Fine ended the frame with twelve points to help the Griffins lead, 71-58.
Bossler would tie her career high in triples at the 7:43 mark to extend the Griffin advantage to sixteen (76-60). For the stanza, GMercyU made nine free throws to close out the 87-76 victory.
Mt. Aloysius held the glass, outrebounding the Griffins, 40-34. Breana Kendrick led the Mounties with a team high 20 points and 12 rebounds.
The Griffins return back to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they face Salve Regina.
