GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Top-seeded Gwynedd Mercy took down Neumann, 7-0, in a semifinal matchup of the inaugural 2018 Atlantic East Conference Field Hockey Tournament. The Griffins move on to the championship game on Saturday where they'll host second-seeded Wesley with a tentative start time of 2 p.m.
GMercyU unleashed a five-goal second half, netting four of the tallies off of penalty corners.
Erika Cimino and
Michaela Swenk each scored twice while
Kathryn Lehman added a goal and three assists.
The goalie tandem of
Sarah Crane and
Abi Kennedy added to the team's single-season record with their tenth shutout on the year as the defense did not allow a recorded shot on the evening.
Unassisted goals in the first half from Cimino and Lehman helped stake Gwynedd to a 2-0 lead at the break.
Alyssa Tomsic welcomed the second half to make it 3-0 just 1:46 into the stanza. The team racked up 15 shots and nine corners as the team set a season high in goals.
Allison Campbell also scored for Gwynedd Mercy. The two goals from Cimino and five total points by Lehman were career highs for each.
Shannon Carroll's assist moved her into a tie for fourth place on the all-time list with 31 helpers.
Now, the Griffins will face the Wolverines, who were 1-0 overtime winners over Marywood in the day's other semifinal, this Saturday in the first-ever title game of the Atlantic East Conference. The two teams met here in Gwynedd Valley back on October 13th with the Griffins posting a 2-0 win.
