IMMACULATA, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy's playoff push ended as the Griffins fell in four sets (25-18, 19-25, 25-19, 25-14) at Immaculata on Wednesday night.
Both teams needed a win to clinch the final playoff spot in the Atlantic East Conference Tournament which kicks off next week, but the Griffins were knocked out of the hunt.
Madelyn Mosser turned in seven kills, 11 digs, and a season-high five blocks (two solo).
Cassie McCarney also got in on the block party with a career-high three. In all, the team put up a season-high nine blocks on the evening.
Liz Schule was tops in the kill department with eight along with three total blocks (two solo). Schule and
Cait Saalfrank each had two service aces.
Trailing 18-17 in the first set, the Mighty Macs rolled off a 7-1 spurt to go up 1-0. In the second set, the Griffins hit 11-5-49 (.122) and fought through 13 ties and six lead changes including a 5-1 run to even things up.
Leading 8-6 in the third, Gwynedd saw Immaculata take the lead for good, thanks to a 6-0 run. IU outscored the Griffins, 10-1, in the midway in the fourth to build a lead they would not relinquish.
Madi Curley and Shelby Belk each had 11 kills to lead the Mighty Macs.
This would be the last match for the team's two seniors: McCarney and
Brittany Albert. McCarney spent three seasons as a Griffin, totaling 190 kills, 70 aces, and 307 digs in 86 career matches. Albert was a two-year member of the squad, as she amassed 173 kills, 27 aces, and 223 digs in 45 matches.
