IMMACULATA, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy had their eight-game winning streak snapped as the Griffins fell on the road, 71-70, at Immaculata on Saturday in Colonial States Athletic Conference action.
Will Davis led the Griffins with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Courtney Cubbage added 17 points along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Rich Dunham (11) and
Rip Engel (10) rounded out the GMercyU double-digit scoring.
The Mighty Macs jumped out early to a quick 11-2 lead forcing a Griffin timeout. GMercyu responded, cutting the lead to 14-11 with a Davis three-pointer with just over fifteen minutes remaining in the first half. Trailing by seven (20-13) the Griffins used a 7-0 run sparked by a
Ty Jones steal to set up a Cubbage three-point play. A Jones drive would cap the run to tie the game on the next possession.
Immaculata held the lead again but GMercyU would go on a 12-5 spurt over the next five minutes to take the lead when a Cubbage steal would lead to a
Rich Dunham fast-break layup with 5:58 remaining. Gwynedd would close out the half when a
Matt Carter driving layup would start a 10-2 run, ended by an Engel layup and pair of free throws for a 42-33 halftime lead. The Griffins would shoot 16-of-31 (51.6%) in the stanza.
A pair of Cubbage layups would hold the Griffin lead at 50-40 to start the second stanza. A quartet of team free throws and another Cubbage driving layup would keep the Macs at bay (56-46) halfway through the second half. Holding an eight point lead a 6-0 Griffin run would give GM their largest lead (64-50) after a pair of Dunham free throws with 7:30 remaining. A Davis layup with 5:23 left would be the only Griffin field goal over the next four minutes despite the 66-55 advantage. Hanging onto the lead 68-63 after a pair of Cubbage free throws Immaculata would tie the game at 68-68 with 2:37 remaining. A Davis layup with 1:29 left would give the Griffins a 70-68 lead. Holding the edge, Davis blocked a Mighty Mac attempt with 29 seconds remaining. However, the Griffins struggled at the free throw line down the stretch, giving Immaculata the ball with 23 ticks remaining.
Brandon McCullough would knock down the eventual game winner on a three with just seven seconds remaining in the contest. The Griffins had two looks in the final seconds but were unable to get a shot off, giving Immaculata the 71-70 victory.
The Mighty Macs out-rebounded the Griffins, 49-38, and held the GMercyU offense to just 1-of-13 shooting from beyond the arc.
Gwynedd Mercy returns home on Tuesday evening when they host Neumann University at 7 p.m. in a rematch of the two playoff finalists from a year ago.
