PHILADELPHIA -- Gwynedd Mercy took on Division I Penn on Sunday afternoon at the historic Palestra but came out on the wrong end of an 89-25 defeat to the Quakers.
The contest featured a matchup of conference winners from a year ago: the Griffins as the Colonial States Athletic Conference champions and the Quakers as the Ivy League champs.
Shannon Carroll had six points with
Denise Sacco adding five as points were at a premium. GMercyU was held to nine field goals on the day.
The team was able to keep the Quakers within reach in the first. Down 4-0, a three from
Larissa Leyes pulled the Griffins within one. After a Penn bucket on the next possession, the score remained just 6-3 for over four minutes. Eleah Parker's basket after the first media timeout started a 10-0 run to close out the quarter. Penn stretched their lead in the second and led 37-10 at the half.
Parker totaled 12 points and a game-high 15 points for the Quakers (11-5). Deja Jackson netted 14 with Kristen Daley scoring 11.
Alison Szyszko led GMercyU with six rebounds while
Marisa Sullivan and
Chyanne Fine each dished out a pair of assists.
Denise Sacco and
Olivia Roseman also knocked down a three-pointer on the day.
Gwynedd Mercy (12-7) now has its sights set for Wednesday's Colonial States Athletic Conference clash with Cabrini in Radnor starting at 6 p.m.
