Griffins Prevail Over Gators In Shooting Display

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Griffins fought off Notre Dame of Maryland, 65-58, in a long-range affair to win their fourth-straight contest Saturday afternoon at The Griffin Complex. Each team had double-digit three-pointers made, as the two totaled 21 on the day.

Susan Bossler connected on three of them to finish with a team-high 13 points. Julianna Hoisington also knocked down three as she had 11. Chyanne Fine added 10 points and seven rebounds. It was the second game in a row Gwynedd Mercy (9-6, 6-1 CSAC) had 10 or more three's in a game.

Justine Mudiay led the Gators (4-10, 1-6 CSAC) with a game-high 19 points. Dania Taylor added six points, five assists, and 12 rebounds.

Both teams came out firing in the first quarter, as the teams traded trifectas early on. The game started off with the Gators sinking a quick three, followed with Bossler and Hoisington hitting one of their own. Notre Dame then sunk two more on consecutive possessions for a 12-9 edge. Down four (16-12), Adams hit her first layup of the game followed by a three from Larissa Leyes to give the Griffins their lead back at the end of one. A nine of the 10 field goals in the first were all on three-pointers.

A big 9-0 run in the second, helped GMercyU break a 21-21 tie. Fine hit a bucket inside followed by a steal from Hoisington which led to a three from Marissa Sandone.  Adams hit a basket from under the net to give the Griffins a seven point lead.  Alison Szyszko's layup to widen the lead to double figures, their largest of the half, but the Gators quickly hit a three before the half, to make it 33-26 at the half.

The Gators sunk a layup thirty five seconds into the third, but Bossler quickly answered with her third three followed by a layup from Szyszko for a 38-28 edge. Again, both teams would swap three's , this time towards the end of the frame. Notre Dame hit the last of the longballs on their final possession of the frame to make it a nine-point game (51-42), heading into the fourth.

Fine opened up the final quarter four points and a big triple from Roseman and a driving layup in the lane from Leyes gave GMercyU its biggest lead of the game 60-44 with 5:44 to go. However, Notre Dame did not go quietly, scoring six-straight points to get within 10 with just over three minutes to go. A three from Notre Dame's Adrianna Fletcher and a bucket from Mudiay off a steal pulled the Gators to just 62-55. Justice Walrath then made it a six-point game with her triple with only 41 seconds remaining. Adams pulled in a defensive rebound off a Gator miss which led to Roseman sinking one of two from the foul line to account for final score of 65-58.

Gwynedd took good use of 14 Gator turnovers, converting them to 18 points. The squad also outrebounded, Notre Dame, 48-3.

Adams totaled six points, six rebounds, and five assists. Roseman finished the day with a career-best 10 boards while chipping in five points and four assists.

They will be back in action this Wednesday at home against Keystone in a CSAC Doubleheader starting at 6 p.m.
