GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Sophomore
Abreeanna Bisenius tallied a career-high 12 kills but the Griffins fell in a tight contest to Penn State-Abington, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-23), Wednesday night at The Griffin Complex in the Griffins' home opener.
Liz Schule added 10 kills, which tied a personal best, while
Kerry McGlinn was two digs shy of a double-double (24 assists/8 digs). The two teams battled in every set, as the largest lead between the two was only seven points.
For the Lions, Andia Anderson tallied 11 kills and two solo blocks. Teammate Cortney Schwar added 15 assists, six kills, six digs and an ace.
The first set, which had nine ties and five lead changes, left no room for error, as the biggest lead of the set was no more than three points. It was a tale of scoring runs, as each team put together spurts to go ahead. The Griffins went up, 15-12, after a kill from Bisenius, only to see Abington net five points in a row. Later, a kill from Schule put GM ahead, 23-21, but again, the Lions netted four-straight to take the set.
In the second, Gwynedd fell behind by as much as seven (14-7), only to get it within three (22-19), but only scored one more point the rest of the way.
After
Cait Saalfrank's ace in the third gave the Griffins their largest lead of the night (13-6), Abington would go on an 11-1 run. They would go up 23-19, looking to close it out, but Gwynedd used one last surge, getting kills from
Kaylee Craig and Schule as part of a 4-0 spurt to knot it up at 23-23. The Lions used a kill and won the match on an ace.
Saalfrank led Gwynedd (0-5) with 19 digs. Her and
Natalie Danze chipped in two aces apiece.
As a team, the Griffins went 30-25-106 hitting line compared to Abington's 24-15-91 effort.
GMercyU opens up CSAC play this Saturday when they travel to Cairn in an 11 a.m. start.
