GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Three goals from
Brianna O'Connell helped spark Gwynedd Mercy over Widener, 3-1, Tuesday night as the Griffins improve to 6-0 on the season.
The senior notched her fourth career hat trick scoring twice on penalty strokes and adding another off a corner. She is already the all-time program leader in penalty stroke goals as she now has seven.
The Pride (2-2) struck first, going up 1-0 just 7:49 into the contest when Jackie Daniels was able to knock in a centering pass from Eliza Newlin.
After a scrum in front of the cage, the Griffins were awarded the stroke at the 13:59 mark and O'Connell cashed in, beating Widener goalie Victoria Byrne to knot things up at 1-1. Just over three minutes later O'Connell lined up again for a stroke and converted to give GM its first lead.
Widener came out in the second in a flurry, testing Griffin goalie
Sarah Crane, but the junior answered with two big stops.
In the 52nd minute, O'Connell and Griffins tacked on an insurance goal. On a penalty corner,
Alyssa Tomsic was able to play in a ball in front where O'Connell got a touch to put in her third on the night and eighth on the season.
Crane ended the night with three saves while Byrne totaled nine stops. Gwynedd outshot the Pride, 13-5, and had a 6-4 edge in corners.
Gwynedd Mercy is off until a week from tonight when they play at The College of New Jersey.
