Russo Becomes Program's All-Time Goal Scorer In Rout

Sets records in both points and goals in the same game

TOWSON, MD. -- Senior Melissa Russo became the all-time leading scorer in Gwynedd Mercy Field Hockey history as the Griffins rambled off a 10-2 win at Goucher Sunday afternoon.

Russo totaled four goals and an assist giving her nine points on the day. Her first goal came 8:36 into the contest to make her the all-time leader in goals in the program record books. Going into the day, she was tied in goals (66) and eight points behind the total of 173 set by Maria Karidas '14.

Shannon Carroll and Kaila Brown also added two goals apiece, while Brianna O'Connell and Allison Campbell also tallied for GMercyU (5-0).

Carroll opened the scoring just 3:36 into the contest on an unassisted goal. Russo netted the next three Griffin scores, including the record-breaker, to add to the lead. The Gophers got one back just before the half on a tally from Jackie Juarez.

In the second, Carroll notched her second, this time off a penalty corner with a helper from Russo. One minute later, the Griffins were awarded a penalty stroke and Brianna O'Connell made it count, as the senior recorded her fifth goal to give her the program record for most made strokes in school history.

At the 24:36 mark of the second, Russo's fourth goal on the day gave her the all-time points mark. Campbell recorded her first collegiate goal with 18:15 to play from an assist by Jamie McCarney. Brown would close out the scoring, with the first of her two tallies at the 4:43 mark. Her second was highlight-worthy as she made a charge to the cage with the ball balancing on her stick the entire time. Her flip of the stick over Goucher goalie Megan Wells gave GMercyU its first double-digit goal total of the season.

The team continues play when they host Widener in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday starting at 6 p.m.
