LAPLUME, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy fell at Keystone, 12-5, in the opening round of the 2017 Colonial States Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament on Wednesday. The Griffins now face Immaculata in an elimination game on Friday at PNC Park in Scranton starting at 3 p.m.
Jason Mulvey,
Josh Lopez, and
Dave Tatoian each had two hits as the Griffins pulled within two runs late in the contest, however, the Giants scored five runs in the seventh to open up a lead.
Keystone plated runs in the first, second, and fourth to put the Griffins in a 3-0 deficit. In the fifth, GMercyU used three hits, two walks, and a Keystone error to tie things up at 3-3. With the bases loaded and one out, Mulvey appeared to hit into a double play, but the throw from short was off the mark to allow
Shaughn Wright and
Tommy Nardini to score. Two batters later, Mulvey came home on an RBI double from Tatoian.
Bill Nelson's two-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth, along with two runs in the sixth allowed the Giants to go-ahead for good.
Mulvey would cross a run in the seventh on a groundout and Lopez singled home
Justin Curtin to pull GM within 7-5.
Nelson struck again for Keystone in the five-run seventh, delivering a bases-loaded clearing double as part of the frame. He would drive in a total of five runs on the day.
