Gators Nip Griffins Out Of The Playoff Hunt

BALTIMORE, MD. -- Gwynedd Mercy's quest for a bid to the conference tournament came up a bit short as the Griffins, who needed a win in their CSAC regular-season finale against Notre Dame of Maryland, fell to the Gators in a tight one, 15-14.

GMercyU battled back from an 8-5 halftime deficit to take a 14-11 lead with just over 10 minutes to go. The Gators however scored the game's final four goals, including the eventual game-winner with just 38 seconds remaining. Gwynedd would win the ensuing draw control and get off a final shot but Lauren Mitros' attempt was saved by Notre Dame's Deja Martin with seconds showing.

Mitros scored all five of her goals in the first half but the Gators were able to build a 5-1 lead.

In the second, Samantha Brown found her scoring touch as the freshman netted six goals, tying a season-high. She would net three as part of a 6-0 run which gave Gwynedd the lead for the first time since early in the contest. Aubrey Cook and Haley Williams also added goals as it appeared the Griffins were on their way. Brown's six goal came with 10:18 to play.

Megan Morales, who scored a game-high seven goals, scored twice in the final 8:59 and would assist on Kaitlyn Walter's game-winner with just 38 ticks left.

Mitros also added five groundballs and six caused turnovers, both team highs. Christi Gibbs added a pair of assists along with two GB's.

Gwynedd goalie Bria Gillard recorded 15 saves for the Griffins (3-11, 3-6 CSAC).

Morales finished with nine points while Walter totaled four scores and a helper for the Gators (5-7, 5-4 CSAC), who clinch the sixth and final playoff seed.

The Griffins will close out the 2017 season on Thursday when they play at Rutgers-Camden in a rescheduled contest from March.
