Baseball Begins Weekend Series With A Win

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University baseball team defeated Cabrini, 6-2, on Friday afternoon to open up the CSAC weekend series and win their fifth-straight game.

Justin Curtin had three hits on the day while scoring twice. Dave Tatoian and Nick Mulvey each added a pair of hits with Tatoian adding an RBI and Mulvey a run scored.

The duo of Zach Dennis and R.J. Boyle led the Griffins on the mound. Dennis worked four innings, striking out a pair and allowing just one run. Boyle, who earned the win, worked five innings out of the bullpen striking out six Cavaliers and also allowing just a run as well.

Cabrini struck first in the top of the second on a Casey Plunkett RBI single. The Griffins were able to limit the damage with a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Griffins would answer in the home half of the second with three singles in a row. Shaughn Wright would start the one-out rally. Justin Curtin would move Wright to third and Tommy Nardini would bring home Wright to tie the game at 1-1.

Curtin would put GMercyU up 2-1 in the fourth with his base-running. After singling to lead off the frame, he would advance to second on a deep fly-ball to left. Bobby Heck would move him over to third on a groundout and then later score on a wild pitch.

The Griffins would add insurance runs scoring a pair of runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.

In the sixth, another Curtin single would score Wright on an outfield throwing error. Heck would then plate Curtin with a sacrifice fly. In the seventh, Nick Mulvey would lead off the inning and would come around to score on a Tatoian rbi.  Pinch runner Gabe Leff would score the sixth run for the Griffins when he advanced on a wild pitch.

Cabrini would not go quietly with two outs in the ninth Shaun Stackhouse would collect his third hit. He would score on a Tyler Norris double. Boyle would end the ninth with his third strikeout of the inning.

The Griffins will travel to Cabrini tomorrow for a pair of games starting at 12 p.m. Cabrini plays at Archbishop Carroll High School in Radnor.
