RADNOR, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Baseball team scored a doubleheader sweep over Cabrini Saturday in Colonial States Athletic Conference action. The Griffins won the opener 7-2 and earned a 10-9 comeback win in the nightcap. With the two wins, Gwynedd has now won seven in a row and eight of their last 10.
Nick DeRitis earned the win in game one, pitching a complete game with three strikeouts and allowing just one earned run.
Josh Lopez,
Shaughn Wright and
Jason Mulvey each collected a pair of hits.
The Griffins got on the board early as
Bobby Heck doubled to lead off the game. He would come around to score on a Lopez sacrifice fly for the 1-0 lead. The Cavaliers would respond in the home half of the inning with a pair of runs for a 2-1 lead.
A Wright RBI single in the fourth to score Lopez tied the game at 2-2.
Justin Curtin would then plate Wright for the 3-2 lead.
GMercyU would tack on four more runs with three in the fifth and a run in the sixth. With two outs in the fifth, a
Dave Tatoian solo home-run would spark the inning capped by a
Ryan Keen two-run single.
Jason Mulvey would add a solo home-run in the sixth, his first longball of his career.
In game two,
Nick Mulvey lead the Griffin offense going 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBI's and three runs scored. Heck, Tatoian and Curtin added a pair of hits as well.
The Griffins got on the scoreboard early with a four run first thanks to a Heck solo home-run and a
Nick Mulvey three-run homer. However both teams combined for 10 runs in the first inning with Cabrini taking a 6-4 lead.
GMercyU would cut the lead to 6-5 in the third and retake the lead in the fifth 7-6 thanks to a Curtin RBI double and Keen sacrifice fly.
Cabrini would battle scoring a pair of runs in the fifth and adding another run in the sixth for a 9-7 lead.
The Griffins down to last at-bats put together a three-run seventh inning to take the lead for good.
Justin Forktus would lead off the inning reaching on a hit by pitch. That would setup Keen to tie the game (9-9) with home-run with two strikes on him.Â
Jason Mulvey would then walk and steal a base to put himself in scoring position. After a Tatoian walk Lopez would come to the plate with one out. He would then single to score Mulvey for the 10-9 lead.
Reliever
Sachael Sciarretta would close the door in the seventh with three strikeouts. Sciarretta would earn the win working two plus innings on the mound while striking out five. Starter
Mike Di Ianni earned the no-decision working in the fifth inning while striking out five batters as well.
The Griffins return to action on Monday when they will host nationally ranked The College of New Jersey. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
