Griffins Cage Gators In DH Sweep

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy scored a season-high in runs in game one and used a late rally to take game two as the Griffins swept a Colonial States Athletic Conference Doubleheader over Notre Dame of Maryland Monday afternoon.

Game one
The Griffins (10-12, 6-4 CSAC) tied a season-high with 13 hits and used a 12-run second inning to go on and win, 15-5. Nikki Canfield tied a career-best with four RBI's, going 2-for-3. Jenna Trythall was 3-for-3 with three RBI's and two runs scored. Lauren Waller knocked in three, while scoring three times.

Waller's two-run triple in the first followed by a Trythall base hit put GMercyU ahead, 3-0. In the second, the Griffins totaled 10 hits, highlighted by Canfield's bases loaded clearing three-run triple, to plate a total of 12 runs.

Notre Dame would cross a run in the fourth and add four more in the fifth, but starter Alexis Gartner got out of a bases loaded situation to end the inning and kick in the 10-run rule for the win. Gartner struck out three, walked just two, and yielded four earned runs on nine hits.

Game two
The Griffins used a three-run fifth to erase a 3-1 deficit to go on and complete the sweep. Alyssa Morales fanned two batters and did not allow a walk for her sixth win of the season. She scattered seven hits as all three runs scored were unearned.

After an RBI single put the Gators ahead, 1-0, in the third, Gwynedd answered in the bottom half with a run thanks to Morales, who doubled home Becki Christoffers. But Notre Dame would cross two in the fourth, thanks in no part to an error and passed ball, reclaiming the lead, 3-1.

With runners at second and third in the bottom half of the fourth, Notre Dame's Madison King induced an two-out popup to end the Gwynedd threat.

The Griffins used an inning-ending double play in the fifth and took that momentum into the bottom half of the frame. With one out, Morales would single and reach second on an error. She would then hustle home and beat the throw on Jessica Behr's infield single. Waller then ripped a double to left to score Behr from first and more importantly, take the first lead of the game. Waller would move up to third on the throw home. Trythall tacked on an insurance run as her groundout to second allowed Waller to cross home plate.

Gwynedd turned another double play in the sixth and Morales got a 1-2-3 seventh to shut the door on the sweep.

King was 2-for-3 with a double and run scored for the Gators (3-14-1, 2-8 CSAC) in game two.

Gwynedd Mercy heads to Cabrini for two on Thursday to continue CSAC play.
