NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Gwynedd Mercy held off Mary Washington, 9-7, in the day's first contest, but fell to Hilbert, 7-4, in the second to split a pair of games Tuesday afternoon.
Nikki Canfield and
Lauren Waller each drove in three runs, scored twice and had a double against Mary Washington. Canfield added a home run and walked once.
Alyssa Morales added three hits at the plate and struck out seven in four-plus innings of work in the circle.
RBI doubles from Waller and Canfield in the first staked the Griffins to a 3-0 lead. The team added a run each in the second, third and fourth to go up 6-0. Morales would allow only two hits through four innings before the Eagles got something going in the fifth, as they scored four times on four hits and an error to cut the GM lead to just two.
Canfield got two of those runs back in the sixth with a two-run shot to left, for her third career home run. Gwynedd would plate a run in the top of the seventh and head to the final frame with a five-run lead. Mary Washington made it interesting, scoring three runs on four hits but Morales would cement the win with a strikeout to end it.
In the game with Hilbert, the Griffins saw the Hawks erase a 2-1 lead in the seventh with six runs in the frame to go ahead for good.
Jess Behr cranked a solo shot in the first for a 1-0 edge. The homer is her 11th career dinger and moves her into a tie for second place in the all-time program record book.
GM looked for more runs in the third, but Hilbert pitcher Marisa McIntyre got out of bases loaded jam with a two-out strikeout.
After the Hawks got on the board to tie things up in the fifth on an RBI triple, Morales would double home
Jenna Trythall in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim the lead, heading into the seventh.
Back-to-back singles put runners on with no outs in the seventh for Hilbert. A total of five hits, including a two-run single from Brittany Cooley capped the six-run frame.
Marissa Campbell drove in a run in their final at-bat in the seventh. Later, with runners at first and second, Becky Christoffers doubled to score pinch runner
Julie Downs, but Trythall was thrown out at the plate on the same play. Morales went down swinging for the final out.
Morales had two of the seven hits allowed by McIntyre, who struck out nine and walked five.
The Griffins (2-2) get back at it on Thursday with games against Penn College (3:30 p.m.) and LaRoche (5:30 p.m.)
