GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy won their Colonial States Athletic Conference opener, taking a CSAC Doubleheader from visiting Clarks Summit on Saturday. The Griffins won game one, 10-1, and the second, 5-3.
The wins also snap a five-game slide as GMercyU also played its first games of the season at home.
Game one saw starter
Alyssa Morales limit the Defenders to just one run on four hits. The offense was spread around as five players either had multi hits and/or multi runs scored.
After Clarks Summit crossed a run in the first, GMercyU answered in the bottom half with a five-spot, highlighted by
Marissa Campbell's two-run triple. Morales worked herself out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the second.
Kaeleigh Criniti delivered a two-run single as part of a three-run second.
Alexis Gartner would double home two more runs in the fourth. Morales would get a 1-2-3 fifth to enforce the mercy rule.
Campbell finished 2-for-3 with a career-high three RBI's. Criniti went 2-for-2 with two RBI's and two runs.
Two runs in the fifth broke open a 3-3 contest in the game two.
Lauren Waller tripled home Morales for the go-ahead run. Waller would follow suit, scoring on base hit from
Jenna Trythall.
Once again, the Defenders struck early, getting a two-out, two-run double in their first at-bat.
Nikki Canfield changed that with one swing of the bat, tripling home two runs in the bottom half.
Waller led off the third with an inside the park home run as she beat home a throw from right field to temporarily put GM ahead. A run off a wild pitch in the fourth from CSU tied things back up again.
Campbell picked up the win in relief of starter Trythall, going 3.1 innings, allowing just two baserunners and striking out three.
Waller and
Jessica Behr each had two hits apiece in game two.
Tomorrow's scheduled twinbill with Catholic has been postponed due to the impending inclement weather with no makeup date at this time. The team will see action on Wednesday when they face Kean in another rescheduled two-fer right here starting at 3 p.m.
