GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Down three goals late in the fourth quarter, Gwynedd Mercy rallied to force overtime but it was Dylan De Meo of Mount Saint Mary who scored 33 seconds into the extra session to give the Knights an 11-10 win over the Griffins Sunday afternoon in a rescheduled contest from a day prior.
Joseph Pandolfi tied a career-high with four points on two goals and two assists.
Jacob Snavely,
Ryan Simpson, and
Jordan Dzierzgowski added two scores apiece.
Dominic Moscariello and
Kohler Setley also tallied for the Griffins (1-3). Setley added two helpers on the day as well.
De Meo led all attackers with four goals and two assists for the Knights (2-2). Nicholas Graziano contributed three goals and Tristan Earle kicked in two as Mount Saint Mary won for the first time in five all-time meetings between the two teams.
Gwynedd trailed 2-0 after the first and 3-0 into the second before four-straight scores, the last coming from Pandolfi at the 2:16 mark, put the team back on top. However, on the ensuing faceoff, the Griffins were given a penalty and the Knights were able to convert on the man up soon after. MSMC added a late tally to go into the break up, 5-4.
Down 8-6 heading into the fourth, Dzierzgowski added his second of the day 48 seconds into the stanza off a nice feed from Setley. The Knights then kept the Griffins off the board for over the next six minutes while adding two goals of their own to go up 10-7.
Snavely broke the drought at the 8:19 mark followed by a tally from Moscariello two minutes later for a one-goal contest. With 3:22 left in the fourth, the Griffins took advantage of a bad MSMC clear as Pandolfi deadlocked it at 10-10. Gwynedd would win the ensuing faceoff and set up their offense, but their four attempts could not find the back of the net.
Alfonso Manzo started a potential transition with his caused turnover, stripping Danny Kugler and getting the ball back on offense. After a GMercyU timeout, the Griffins set up for the potential go-ahead goal which they thought they had with seconds remaining, but Snavely's close shot was waved off due to a crease violation.
In the overtime, Gwynedd once again won the all-important faceoff, but De Meo would return the favor to Manzo, stripping him in the defensive zone. De Meo would end it as he beat goalie
Sean Myers for the game-winner at the 3:27 mark.
Myers finished the day with eight saves, six of which came in the second half. His counterpart, goalie Christopher Doerr frustrated the Griffins with 16 saves.
By the numbers, Gwynedd Mercy outshot Mount Saint Mary, 40-30, had more groundballs (33-18) and caused turnovers (9-6).
Simpson totaled a game-high five ground balls while
Luke Xanthopoulos registered a game-high three caused turnovers. Manzo and
Marc Bushong also added two CT's.
Gwynedd Mercy will look to get back on track when they hopefully play at Albright on Wednesday.
