GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Lacrosse team started their 2017 campaign hosting Wesley College on Saturday afternoon, but it was the Wolverines scoring a 22-10 victory over the Griffins.
Lauren Mitros led GMercyU with four goals on the afternoon.
Arianna Hensinger added a pair while
Kerri Flanagan added a goal and assist.
Samantha Brown,
Gina Giovinco and
Aubrey Cook all added a tally each as well.
Bria Gillard made eight saves in goal for the Griffins while Shelby Schirmer made three for the Wolverines (2-0).
The Griffins jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Hensinger, Flanagan and Mitros in the game's first 3:02. Wesley would cut the deficit to 3-2 but the Griffins would respond on a goal from Mitros at the 23:16 mark for a 4-2 lead. The Wolverines would tie the game at 4-4 but the Griffins would respond again with a goal from Brown for the 5-4 lead with 20:34 on the clock. Wesley would respond and take a 6-5 lead with just over eighteen minutes remaining in the half.
The Wolverines would stretch the lead to 10-5 before Mitros would bring GM back to within four (10-6). Hensinger would cut it back to three 10-7 but the Wolverines would score seven unanswered goals over the next eleven minutes for the 17-7 halftime lead.
Coming off of a first half that saw 24 goals. Both teams combined for just eight in the second stanza.
Cook scored the first goal of the second half to cut the lead to 17-8 but Wesley responded with a pair of goals to hold a 19-8 lead. Giovinco would get on the board with her goal to cut the lead to 19-9. Mitros would score the Griffins last goal with 11:36 remaining to cut the lead to 19-10. Wesley would score three more goals for the 22-10 victory.
Fallon Fore led Wesley with seven goals and one assist. Bailey Olds added five scores and two helpers.
The Griffins return back to action on Wednesday when they will host Elizabethtown College at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
