UNION, N.J. -- Gwynedd Mercy suffered a 4-1 defeat at Kean on Saturday in non-conference action.
The Griffins would get on the board in the top of the first.
Jason Mulvey would lead off the game with a single followed by a base hit from
Nick Mulvey. Now with runners at second and third, Tatoian would groundout to short, allowing
Jason Mulvey to race home for the 1-0 lead.
Kean would answer with a run in the second, taking advantage of two Gwynedd errors. With runners at second and third, a grounder to first was flipped to starting pitcher
Mike Di Ianni to try and get the forceout. Di Ianni was unable to find the bag on the play allowing the bases to be full of Cougars. After two-straight fielder's choice forceouts at home, a ground ball to second was misplayed, allowing an unearned run to score. In the third, Brock Podgurski scored on an RBI double from Frank Urso with two outs for a 2-0 advantage.
Gwynedd had their chances offensively; getting two on in scoring position in the fourth with two outs, but a pop up from
Jason Mulvey was the third out. In the fifth,
Nick Mulvey would lead off with a single to left, but would be thrown out at second attempting to steal it. Tatoian would rip a double into left center in the very next at-bat, but would be stranded at second.
The sixth inning saw GMercyU with a prime opportunity, getting the bases loaded with one out. Kean's Mike Occhi, who came in relief in the fifth, got out of the jam with a force out at home and a strikeout to end the Griffin threat.
Podgurski would add a run in the seventh with an RBI double. In the eighth, the Griffins committed three errors, leading to another run for a 4-1 Kean lead.
Occhi would get the win, going four-plus innings with seven strikeouts for Kean (2-0).
Jared Gorman, who entered in the third, took the loss.
Tatoian finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, walk, and a double while
Nick Mulvey was 2-for-4. In all, the team left 10 men on base and committed five errors on the day.
Gwynedd Mercy will have their home opener on Tuesday, February 28th when they host The College of New Jersey in a 3 p.m.
