Field Hockey Upended In Overtime At Stockton

POMONA, N.J. -- Brianna O'Connell scored twice but it was Stockton edging Gwynedd Mercy in a wild overtime affair, 3-2, Wednesday night.

The two goals move O'Connell into third place on the school's all-time scoring list as the senior tallied career goals 50 and 51 to move ahead of former Griffin Sarah Jackson.

The team outshot the Opsreys, 23-14, and had a 14-7 edge in corners, but a back-and-forth extra session did not go the Griffin's way.

Gwynedd (8-3) got on the board first when Shannon Carroll set up O'Connell 17 minutes into the game. Stockton scored with less than eight minutes before the half to send the teams at a 1-1 tie at the break.

O'Connell struck again for her 10th goal on the season as she was able to get a stick on a pass from Melissa Russo, to deflect it in past Osprey keeper Emily Gilligan. Again, Stockton was able to score late in the stanza on a score from Sarah Gawrysiak with just 8:40 in regulation.

In the overtime, both teams took advantage of the open space as the two squads combined for 14 shots. The Griffins fired off eight, but Gilligan made five of her 16 saves in the extra time. Gwynedd goalie Sarah Crane kept the team in the contest with seven stops of her own on the evening.

Gawrysiak would score her second of the contest with 36 seconds left in the first overtime on a shot from the right wing that got by Crane. This marked the second overtime game this season Gwynedd has been in, and broke a three-game win streak over the Ospreys in eight career meetings (4-4).

Gwynedd Mercy will look to rebound on Saturday when they take on Keystone in a Colonial States Athletic Conference tilt at home starting at 2 p.m.
