GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. --
Grace Macnamara's first collegiate goal could not have come at a better time, as the senior put in the go-ahead score in with 5:38 left in regulation to lift the fourth-seeded Gwynedd Mercy Griffins past the fifth-seeded Neumann Knights, 2-1, Monday night in a first-round matchup of the 2017 Colonial States Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament.
The Griffins now head to top-seeded Marywood on Wednesday for a semifinal showdown. Game time is TBA.
Macnamara pinched in from her defensive spot on a corner kick, where she was able to get a solid boot on a ball in the box for the eventual game-winner.
Early in the contest, rookie
Victoria Braeunle outran a defender from a short pass from
Tori Goebig into the box and was able to get a foot and slip one under Neumann goalie Brittany Cullison for the 1-0 lead just 1:57 into the contest. The goal was the freshman's tenth on the year.
Later in the half, the Griffin defense thwarted a prime Neumann scoring chance off a corner kick. A header that was going towards the right post and past goalie
Kailey Hopkins was cleared out by
Danielle Baxter to squash the threat.
The Knights tied things up at the 23:07 mark of the second when Shannon Martina dribbled in open space into the box. Her shot was out of the reach of Hopkins to knot it up at 1-1.
Hopkins finished the night with one save while Cullison recorded seven.
