IMMACULATA, PA. -- With two goals and an assist, senior
Melissa Russo became the Colonial States Athletic Conference All-Time Scoring Leader as Gwynedd Mercy closed CSAC play with a 7-1 victory at Immaculata Tuesday night.
Russo, who needed to pass the old mark of 216 points set by Alvernia's Becky Macchione, entered the night at 213. After scoring the game's first goal just over five minutes into the contest, she broke the mark with her second score with 14 seconds in the half, helping give the Griffins (14-3, 7-0 CSAC) a 3-0 lead at the break.
The Mighty Macs (6-12, 4-3 CSAC) cut into the lead with a score 8:48 into the second on a goal from Megan Donegan. But GMercyU answered with two goals from
Brianna O'Connell minutes apart to put the IU in their rearview mirrors.
Kaila Brown later scored with
Kaitlyn Lutz adding her second tally on the night at the end of the second on a penalty corner to account for the scoring.
For Lutz, it was her fourth-straight multi-point game as she totaled the two goals and added two assists.
Goalie
Abi Kennedy secured three saves for her fourth win in a row. IU's Randie Kuhar was kept busy, facing 36 GM shots and making 15 saves.
Russo's two goals have her 92 in her four-year career, to move her into second place on the all-time conference list, one behind Macchione's total of 93.
Gwynedd Mercy, who has clinched the top playoff seed in next week's CSAC Tournament, will close out the regular season on Saturday when they play at Lebanon Valley in a non-conference matchup. GM will host a semifinal game here next Wednesday against an opponent to be finalized this week.
