GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Field Hockey team scored their fourth-straight shutout victory and fifth overall with a 7-0 win over visiting Marywood on Saturday evening.
Four different Griffins scored on the evening highlighted by
Kaitlyn Lutz and her three-goal performance. For Lutz, it was her second career hat trick.
The win also puts Gwynedd as the top seed in the upcoming CSAC Tournament as well.
Melissa Russo added a pair of scores and both
Abigail Gabriel and
Allison Campbell added helpers making it the fifth game in a row with the team scoring five or more goals. Russo added to her single-season scoring record with goals #28 and #29 on the season.
Lutz would score the game's first tally on an assist from Gabriel. Gabriel would then add her goal just over two minutes later for the early 2-0 advantage. Campbell and Russo would close out the first half scoring both with unassisted tallies.
Russo added her second to start the second half assisted by Lutz. Lutz would then complete the hat-trick with back-to-back goals the second coming off of a penalty corner.
Abi Kennedy recorded one save to record her third clean sheet of the season. Kerri Mountz made 16 stops for the Pacers (4-11, 3-3 CSAC).
The team was joined by honorary captain Kaitlyn Finley, through partnership with The Sunshine Foundation, for the coin toss at the start of the game and was featured in a picture with the team. The Griffins wore purple socks to mark the occasion.
GMercyU will travel to Immaculata on Tuesday for their final regular season CSAC contest at 7 p.m. The CSAC Tournament begins on Wednesday, November 1st as GM will host a semifinal contest.
