Senior Night Plans Foiled In Close Defeat

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Women's Soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat to Marywood University on Tuesday evening on Senior Night to snap their five game winning streak.

Prior to the game, the Griffins took time to honor their six seniors: Danielle Schneck, Anna Numerato, Meghan Petroski, Sarah Nedwick, Grace Macnamara and Kayleigh Loose.

GMercyU (8-5-1, 6-2-1 CSAC) scored the game's first goal when Tori Goebig deflected home a cross from Petroski minutes into the contest. Marywood responded in the ninth minute with a goal from Renae Moken with her shot from the top of the box that beat Griffin keeper Kailey Hopkins just inside the left post.

Petroski would win a 50/50 ball in the 37th minute and was able to slide it past the Pacer goalie just outside the box but she was unable to get another touch on the ball when a Pacer defender cleared the ball out of the goal mouth to deny her the opportunity to retake the lead. The teams would head into the halftime break tied at 1-1.

Hopkins would keep the game at 1-1 in the 52nd minute when she stopped a breakaway attempt by Megan Swiecicki by sprawling to stop the shot in between her shin guards. However, the Pacers (9-5, 8-1 CSAC) would strike first in the second stanza after a scramble in the box from a corner in the 58th minute that found the foot of Desi Rill for the 2-1 Marywood advantage.

The Griffins would find the equalizer in the 74th minute off of a corner set when Macnamara found Erin Reitmeyer on a near post run to deflect the ball into the back of the net.

With the score even at 2-2, Julie Youngman would find herself wide open inside the eighteen after a quick change of possession to put the Pacers up for good 3-2 in the 84th minute.

Hopkins made 10 saves on the evening with her counterpart Aly Moyer recording two. Gwynedd held a 6-3 corner advantage but the Pacers out-shot the Griffins, 17-6.

The Griffins will look to bounce back on Saturday when they host Rosemont at 11 a.m.
