Big Second Half Lifts Field Hockey Past Cabrini

GWYNDD VALLEY, PA. -- Five unanswered second half goals lifted the Gwynedd Mercy University Field Hockey team to a 5-0 shutout victory over Cabrini on Wednesday evening in a Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup.

The senior duo of Brianna O'Connell and Melissa Russo accumulated all five goals as O'Connell scored the first three and Russo the last two. For O'Connell, she tacked on season goals #12, #13, and #14 while Russo added to her league-leading total of 22 goals.

O'Connell broke a scoreless tie in the 48th minute when she scorched a backhand blast from the left side of the arc on an assist from Shannon Carroll. Two minutes and twenty three seconds later, the senior found the ball on her stick again as she knocked home a pass through the crease by Michaela Swenk for the 2-0 lead in the 50th minute. She notched her third goal in a span of just over five minutes when batted in a loose ball in the crease from Russo.

The Griffins (10-3, 3-0 CSAC) kept the momentum going in the closing moments as Russo put GMercyU up 4-0 in the 65th minute. Carroll set up the goal when she carried to the end line and found Russo's stick in-front of the cage.

The game's final goal came at the end of the game when the Griffins were awarded a penalty corner as time was about to expire. Russo played the corner to O'Connell and then deflected in the shot from the top of the arc to account for the scoring on the night.

For the game, the Griffins outshot Cabrini, 16-4, and held a 12-7 corner advantage.

Sarah Crane posted two saves to earn her second shutout of the season. Taylor Bookman made eight stops for the Cavaliers (4-7, 2-1 CSAC)

With the win, the Griffins have won 17-straight CSAC regular season games.
