SCRANTON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy fought off Marywood in defeating the Pacers, 75-65, in Colonial States Athletic Conference action Wednesday evening.
Four players reached double figures led by
Cedric Elleby who posted game highs of 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Rip Engel registered 15 while
Arron Goodman and
Ty Jones each contributed 11. Gwynedd would end the first half on a 10-2 run to lead 34-29 at the intermission. They would keep the Pacers out of reach with key baskets down the stretch to notch their fifth win in a row.
Connor Shroyer scored 16 points off the bench for Marywood (3-15, 3-8 CSAC). Teammate Jeremy Ringland chipped 13.
A three from Engel followed by a layup from Elleby to open the second stanza put the Griffins (15-3, 9-2 CSAC) ahead by double digits (39-29). Shroyer would hit from downtown to get the Pacers within 43-41 with just under 15 minutes to play, but GMercyU scored the next six to go up by eight.
Marywood would give it one last push, using a 7-0 spurt to make it a 62-59 game with 2:30 on the clock. Rookie
Rich Dunham would tilt the momentum back in Gwynedd's favor on the next possession with a big three-ball. Later on, Elleby would complete an even bigger three-point play to get the lead up to seven (68-61) with 1:28 left to help keep the Pacers away for good.
Dunham, Elleby, and Engel each doled out four dimes apiece while Elleby added five blocks and four steals. The team would shoot 43% (25-of-58) and outrebound Marywood, 37-33.
The Griffins head to Neumann on Saturday as the two finalists from last season's title game meet for the second time this season. The Knights scored a 90-78 win at The Griffin Complex back on December 3rd.
